Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create a map?
To create a map, you need to be logged in with an account. Sign up first, then head to the Create Map form and fill it in with your map details, book information, and an image (for fantasy maps).
Can I create maps for real-world locations?
Yes — Plotted supports both fantasy maps (using an image you upload) and real-world maps (using a standard map layer). Pick the type when you create the map.
Where do I get the map images from?
You should only post images you can legally use. Annotating a map should be a transformative use that adds new expression, meaning, and message to the original work. If you know who drew the original, give 'em credit!
Why "Plotted"?
You know, books have plots. Maps have plots. Get it?
Who made this?
A personal project by Matt at Studio Kirkland. All my favorite books either have maps, because they are in some invented world, or they describe some journey through the real world where I wish there was a map. Over and over I've printed out a map and scribbled notes on it; now we can all do this in one place and share with others.
I have an idea to make this better.
Great! That's not a question but we're still glad you've got an idea. This is pretty new and we'd love to hear what you think can be improved — email hello@plotted.io.
Did I spy an affiliate link?
Yeah, you did. If you click a book link from a map page and buy something, we might earn a small commission from the online store. Web servers cost money.
Somebody added my map on here and I have concerns?
Just let us know — we can help. Contact hello@plotted.io.
