Peter Fleming - brother to James-Bond-Author Ian Fleming - was a real-life adventurer. In this book, he sets out from Beijing to Kashmir, with a passport and a gold brick. The book is hilarious. The Jonathan Cape edition has a great fold-out map, but many modern printings don't have a map at all! This makes it tough to find your way, because Fleming uses local pre-pinyin names, and many place names have been standardized (or replaced by Sinocized versions from the local dialects).
